The Mali Samaja

The Mali are a traditional community found across Hindu society whose customary occupation was cultivation — particularly the growing of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Many sub-groups call themselves Phool Mali (flower Mali) because of their long association with floriculture, supplying garlands and blooms for temples, weddings, and festivals.

The community traces a long agrarian heritage and is recognised as a Backward Class in several Indian states.

The Mali samaja is concentrated in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Punjab and Haryana, with sizeable populations also in the Terai of Nepal. Mother tongues span Marathi, Hindi, Rajasthani, Gujarati, and regional dialects — yet the shared identity of the samaja cuts across state lines.

The Mali community produced one of modern India's most important social reform couples — Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. Born in 19th-century Maharashtra, they pioneered education for girls and the marginalised, founded the Satyashodhak Samaj, and laid foundations for the anti-caste and women's-rights movements that shaped modern India.

Their legacy is a source of pride for the samaja and a reminder of the community's role in progressive social change.

Mali families typically celebrate the major Hindu festivals — Diwali, Holi, Gudi Padwa, Makar Sankranti — alongside region-specific traditions tied to harvests and flower cultivation. Family, hospitality, and respect for elders sit at the heart of community life, and weddings are joyful, multi-day affairs that bring extended kin together.
